The Unitarian Church

I’ve become interested Unitarian Universalism. It seems to me that the ideal religion would be one that focuses on the common message of all religions (deeper meaning, a guiding force, community, compassion, discipline) without getting too focused on the hocus-pocus. That seems to be pretty close to the central tenet of Unitarianism.

As we were leaving Joey and Alice’s, Alice happened to mention that she was raised in the Unitarian church. Now I regret not asking her about it. My friends Dan and Deb went to one a while back and described it as feeling more like a town hall meeting than a church service. Alice’s comment was sooooort of along the same lines. Should have found out more in person.

Most of my friends in high school went to the Unitarian church — their parents were all members. I once asked one of my friends what Unitarians believed, and he said, “Well, I don’t really know. I think they kind of believe in everything. But from what I can tell from my mother, they mostly believe that Eliot Spitzer should be governor.”
