Day of Culture…ie: Food
Another NYC theme is street fairs. This one was nice because we had the whole afternoon to enjoy it. Music of every kind littered the streets and food of every flavor was in every other booth. I really love the atmosphere that these street fairs bring out. It shows off so much of the talent that is all around us. The main draw of this festival for us was the cheese eating contest. Now, I need to admit that I chickened out but these guys were putting away a lb of cheese in something like under two minutes. I’m not saying that’s impossible, but wow, that’s a lot of cheese. Brendan and I hunted down some ice cream in the form of gelato from a French cafe and the people who worked there had no idea which flavors were which. That provided some comedy when Brendan gave his sample spoon back to the salesman who had been trying to find him a lemon flavor. Brendan’s verdict on the first sample was coconut and as we were discussing how far from lemon that actually was, the salesman took that very spoon and started digging around in another container to find out if it too, might be lemon. Now, that Brendan’s spoon being reused in the gelato doesn’t really bother me, but the number of gelato enjoyers at the festival made me wonder how many tasting spoons had made it back in for a double dip?
Extra note: I had ice cream three times today. The previously mentioned gelato was added to in the form of Peanut Butter Cookie Dough and then Frozen Yogurt. Now, the PB Cookie Dough is rivaling for the best flavor I’ve ever consumed label. The Frozen Yogurt was a bonanza of orange creamsicle and chocolate yogurts with fresh raspberries, graham cracker crumbs, and dark chocolate chips. What a day.
